QPR will be playing their football in the Championship once again next season following a 6-0 Barclays Premier League defeat at Manchester City.
Goals from Sergio Aguero (hat-trick), Aleksandar Kolarov, James Milner and David Silva confirmed demotion to England’s second tier for the R’s.
The result leaves the Hoops nine points adrift of safety, with just two league fixtures left to play.
Rangers boss Chris Ramsey made two changes to his side in total for the trip north, following our 2-1 defeat at Liverpool last time out, with Yun Suk-Young and Bobby Zamora drafted in at Eastlands.
Suspension for Nedum Onuoha saw him miss out against his old team, while Brazilian Sandro was unavailable owing to an issue with his visa.
Academy products Brandon Comley, Darnell Furlong and Reece Grego-Cox were named among the R’s substitutes.
City started with Aguero in attack as the Premier League’s top scorer looked to build on his 22 goals for the campaign.
The hosts were also chasing a fourth league win in a row and it didn’t take Aguero long to add goal number 23 for the season – just four minutes, in fact.
The Argentinian drove at Rangers’ defence and when he was able to ride a challenge from Matt Phillips, Aguero dinked the ball home over an onrushing Rob Green from 10 yards to put City in front.
An extremely-early blow for QPR.
A period of lull ensued thereafter. The next chance didn’t arrive until the 16th minute, again falling for City following a scramble in the box. Fernando, however, blazed handsomely over from 12 yards.
Rangers then picked up their game a little. Charlie Austin had the ball in the net around the 20-minute mark but was ruled offside after heading home well from Suk-Young’s cross.
However, the home side doubled their lead come the 32nd minute – and you felt there would be no way back for QPR from here.
Richard Dunne was penalised for a foul on Aguero just outside the box and, when Kolarov stepped up to take the resultant set-piece, he curled home sweetly into the bottom left-hand corner.
Soon after, Zamora blasted over on the volley after Phillips’ excellent centre, while Aguero almost doubled his tally for the afternoon after breaking free of the visiting defence. But Green was on hand to produce a fine one-handed save.
Rangers squandered an even-better chance moments later. Steven Caulker flicked on a ball into the box and when it fell to Leroy Fer, he beat Joe Hart – but not the crossbar. From the rebound, Zamora directed a tame header into the arms of Hart.
City’s Silva fashioned the final effort of the first half in the 44th minute, shooting over from 25 yards.
It took the hosts just five minutes to add a third goal in the second half.
QPR’s Suk-Young, the final man, miscontrolled a pass forwards from Silva to put Aguero in the clear.
The City talisman kept his cool thereafter, driving into the box before slotting past a helpless Green.
Rangers made a change shortly after. Junior Hoilett was introduced, Zamora made way.
Frank Lampard almost scored a fourth goal for the home side in the 55th minute, but his shot from Pablo Zabaleta’s low cross crept just over.
Three minutes later, substitute Hoilett forced Hart into a smart save, with England’s number one goalkeeper diving to his left to palm away the winger’s 25-yard effort.
Silva should have made it 4-0 for City on the hour. The playmaker won a challenge with Dunne and when he advanced into the area, Silva’s subsequent low shot was wonderfully tipped past the post.
Green also pulled off another fine stop soon after to thwart Kolarov.
But Manuel Pellegrini’s men would register a fourth goal come the 65th minute from the penalty spot.
Phillips was pegged back for a foul on Silva in the area. Aguero stepped up to take the kick and duly swept home past Green for his hat-trick.
Four turned to five in the 70th minute. After Green saved well from Wilfried Bony, Silva’s resultant corner was eventually turned in by Milner.
City still had 20 minutes to inflict further damage.
A sixth goal arrived for the home team in the 87th minute. Silva linked well with Bony before advancing into the area, rounding Green and sliding home.
That completed the scoring.
