STADIUM: St Mary’s
LEAGUE POSITION 2013/14: 8th
The 2013/14 campaign was arguably one of the finest in Southampton’s history, as the Saints recorded their best ever Premier League season and their highest points tally.
The fact it was achieved by one of the brightest young crop of players in the country, playing some of the most easy-on-the-eye, free-flowing attractive football, left Saints fans purring.
The selection of four Saints players – namely Adam Lallana, Luke Shaw, Rickie Lambert and Jay Rodriguez – in the England squad that faced Denmark in March only served to enhance the club’s reputation, but with success comes flaws.
At the time of writing, Shaw, Lallana and Lambert have already moved on to pastures new and rumours are rife that a couple more could follow them out the door.
New Saints gaffer Ronald Koeman, who replaced the Spurs-bound Mauricio Pochetinno, will needless to say be keen to keep hold of as many of his top players as possible, but with an Academy the envy of most, few would bet against the south coast side unearthing another plethora of youngsters in the coming years.
MANAGER: Ronald Koeman
Unveiled as Saints boss this summer, Dutch legend Ronald Koeman, 51, signed a three year deal at St Marys.
Koeman resigned from his job at Feyenoord in May after guiding the club to second place in the Eredivisie.
His brother, Erwin, has been appointed as assistant after he left his coaching role at Dutch club RKC Waalwijk, with fellow Dutchman Jan Kluitenberg taking up the role of assistant first team coach / physical coach.
The trio are also joined by English duo Sammy Lee (first team assistant coach) and Dave Watson (goalkeeping coach).
STAR MAN: Dejan LOVREN (Defender)
Southampton completed the signing of Dejan Lovren last summer.
The Croatia international penned a four-year deal having moved from French side Olympique Lyonnais.
He duly excelled during his first full season in English football, making 31 league starts, as Saints enjoyed their best ever season in the top-flight.
