QPR UNDER-18S warmed up for the new Professional Development League campaign by coming from behind to beat Manchester City on Saturday.
Paul Furlong’s charges conceded early but two long-range efforts from George Butler and Reece Grego-Cox handed Rangers the half-time advantage.
City’s late leveller looked to have earned a share of the spoils but the young R’s weren’t to be denied, clinching their first win of pre-season courtesy of Dan Darbyshire’s 83rd-minute winner.
Rangers, fresh from a nine-goal thriller at St. George’s Park seven days earlier, found themselves behind within three minutes. Zackarias Faour was felled, only to guide the resulting free-kick beyond Conor Hudnott’s reach into the far corner.
City’s lead was shortlived, however, as Rangers levelled from a stunning set-piece of their own. Butler strode forward to find the top corner, steering his effort past Charlie Albinson’s despairing dive in the City goal.
No sooner had the R’s restored parity, they were ahead. This time Grego-Cox took centre stage, seizing on a misplaced pass at the back before cooly lobbing Albinson from fully 40 yards.
The R’s lead lasted until eight minutes from time, when a trialist for the home side sent another free-kick high into the net.
Furlong and co. would have the final say, though. After a neat passing move released Darbyshire down the left, the R’s forward drove in before drilling his shot low into the far corner.
Victory provides the perfect preparation for Rangers, who travel to Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday before kicking-off their new Professional Development League campaign this weekend.
