MARC BIRCHAM was pleased hard work in training paid off for his Elite Development Squad after Monday’s 8-1 demolition of Barnet.
The Bees were undone as early as the seventh minute by the dominant R’s, who netted seven before the halfway stage during a one-sided afternoon in north London.
Bircham was delighted by the response of his young guns, who provided the perfect remedy for last week’s defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion.
“It’s always nice to win but, as I’ve always said, it’s more about performances than results for us,” the R’s boss told www.qpr.co.uk.
“We created a lot of chances which was probably the most pleasing thing.
“We’ve worked hard in training on our shooting, crosses and our set-pieces and it has come off well.
“We worked on a lot of things after the Brighton game and it’s always good to see the lads produce it on the day.”
Bircham reserved praise for attacking trio Peter Skapetis, Mo Shariff and Connor Hubble, who all got their names on the scoresheet at The Hive.
Angelo Balanta also impressed from the wing, completing a well-deserved hat-trick direct from a corner.
Bircham added: “When you’ve got those type of attacking players you’re always going to create chances.
“He [Balanta] actually worked on that the other day. I know that sounds strange, but we did and that came off too!”
Skapetis was one of five members of the Under-18s side to feature and the R’s boss was delighted with their impact, as Bircham runs the rule over their futures.
“It’s coming up to decision time for pro contracts,” he said.
“I’d always earmarked this game as one for them to play in and they all did well.”
Despite Monday’s convincing win, Bircham intends to ring the changes as Rangers prepare for their third game in the space of 10 days.
The Under-21s boss, though, is expecting a much tougher test as he takes his young troops to Millwall on Friday.
He added: “We weren’t really tested today but I’ll play a completely different team against Millwall which will be a hard game.
“They also played on Monday so you might see a tired second half!”
