Bothroyd strike not enough for R's ...

JAY BOTHROYD'S opener couldn't prevent Watford coming from behind to take the honours against a QPR Reserves side in a friendly on Tuesday afternoon.

The R's frontman fired the visitors in front but a brace from Fernando Forestieri either side of half-time secured victory for the Hornets at the club's training ground in London Colney.

Rangers named an experienced line-up for the trip to Hertfordshire as Nedum Onouha, Shaun Derry and Ji-Sung Park all featured, while Junior Hoilett partnered Bothroyd in attack.

R's midfielder Samba Diakite also figured in a Hoops shirt after his return from the African Nations Cup earlier in the month.

Marc Bircham's side began the brighter and took just 15 minutes to make their superiority count with an opening goal. Derry proved the provider, threading a neat ball through to Bothroyd who slotted underneath Jack Bonham in the Watford goal.

The lead was shortlived, however, as the hosts levelled moments later. Forestieri found space on the edge of the area before curling his effort into the net with the aid of a deflection off the post.

The woodwork came to the R's rescue on the stroke of half-time as the sides went in level at the break. Mark Yeates connected with Sean Murray's centre but his header cannoned back off the crossbar.

Chances were few and far between in the second period but Hoilett came closest to notching a winner for the visitors, flashing a half-volley agonisingly wide of the bottom corner.

Instead it was Gianfranco Zola's men who stole victory in the closing stages. Substitute Luke O'Nien's cross fell kindly for Forestieri, who swept home from a tight angle to double his and the Hornets' tally.
