An inexplicable refereeing decision inside the opening five minutes cost Rangers dear at Carrow Road, as the R's slumped to their first defeat in eight Championship fixtures.

Damion Stewart was harshly given his marching orders in the fifth minute - and in truth, the R's never really recovered.

Ched Evans opened the scoring moments after the referee's surprise decision and when Mark Fotheringham's deflected effort made it two early in the second half, the R's were soon facing up to their sixth straight defeat at Carrow Road.

Canaries substitute Darel Russell put the icing on the cake for Norwich eight minutes from time, firing home from distance after Lee Camp was dispossessed whilst attempting to clear his lines.

Luigi De Canio made just a solitary enforced change to the starting XI.

With Fitz Hall sidelined with a groin injury sustained in last weekend's victory against Charlton Athletic, De Canio recalled Michael Mancienne, but there was no place in the matchday squad for Akos Buzsaky.

Canaries boss Glenn Roeder resisted the temptation to start veteran striker Dion Dublin on his final bow at Carrow Road, as former R's front-man Jamie Cureton was given the nod to partner Manchester City loanee Evans in attack.

On a warm afternoon in East Anglia, in-form front-man Dexter Blackstock headed inches wide in the opening minute, before Angelo Balanta fired straight at David Marshall from eight yards.

Disaster struck for the R's moments later though, as Stewart was bizarrely shown a red card, in what was surely a case of mistaken identity.

Lee Camp darted from his line in an attempt to sweep up a loose ball, but when he caught Evans, the Manchester City loanee went tumbling to ground.

If anyone was likely to receive their marching orders it was the R's goalkeeper, but Joslin - to the amazement of everyone inside Carrow Road - immediately brandished a red card to Stewart.

Bad turned to worse in the seventh minute, when Evans capitalised on Rangers' failure to clear their lines from a corner, smashing an unstoppable right volley into the roof of the net.

De Canio responded with a double substitution, withdrawing the unfortunate Gareth Ainsworth and Hogan Ephraim and introducing the more defence-minded Zesh Rehman and Mikele Leigertwood.

Buoyed by their stroke of luck, the Canaries continued to throw men forward as the half evolved.

Midfielder Matty Pattison fired wide from 12-yards in the 22nd minute, before Darren Huckerby's sublime effort from an identical angle fell just wide of Camp's left hand post.

Norwich were rampant and when the ball broke free to Ryan Bertrand on the half hour, the post came to Rangers' rescue, as his effort cannoned back off the left upright.

The R's were struggling to gain any sort of foothold on proceedings and their best chance of note arrived courtesy of a Norwich mistake.

Bertrand conceded possession all too easily on the R's right wing, but despite making good ground on route to goal, Balanta's effort from distance lacked direction, as the ball sailed well wide of Marshall's left hand post.

The second period continued in kind, as Norwich continued to pepper the R's rearguard.

Camp saved well from Cureton, before Matthew Connolly hacked Evans' eight yard drive off the line.

But there was nothing Camp or his fellow defenders could do to prevent the Canaries from doubling their lead in the 55th minute, as Fotheringham's weak 20-yard effort squirmed into the far corner via Rehman's outstretched leg.

Undeterred, Rangers fans continued to cheer the R's every move, with the now familiar "De Canio, We're gonna win, When the Rangers sing" chant reverberating around a packed Carrow Road.

Fotheringham should have doubled his tally for the afternoon when he missed an open goal from fully 30-yards, before R's old-boy Roeder gave the Carrow Road faithful their final wish, by introducing Dublin for a late, late cameo.

It was fellow substitute Russell who had the final say though, firing home from fully 35-yards, after Camp was again caught in no-mans land.
