FITTING TRIBUTES

Posted on: Sat 25 Aug 2007

I did not know Ray, nor did I ever meet him. I will leave the tributes of his undoubted fine character to those who did know him.
For me, the best memory of Ray as a QPR player comes from the Cardiff away game last year. I was at university, so went along to the pub to watch the match on Sky by myself, since none of my mates could be bothered (and I expected us to lose given that they were top, so I didn't mind).
In the pub were a bunch of rowdy Cardiff fans, contantly giving stick to me and the one other QPR fan in the pub, who I sat with. Needless to say we kept our heads down for the match whilst these Cardiff fans sang "Top of the League, Hav'in a Laugh" etc all game!
Well we all know what happened, Ray Jay popped up in the last minute to score a great goal and win the game for us. Cue mini pandamonium from myself and the other Ranger in there, who had previously been silent all match! Jumping around hugging a man I didn't even know, in the middle of a northern pub singing Ray Jones' name to the silent Cardiff Boys.
Days like today put things in perspective, how insignificant football is in the grand scheme of things, but although most QPR fans will not have known Ray, I'm sure they all feel the shock and loss in the pit of their stomach's that I too feel today.
Thanks for the memories Ray - Rest In Peace.

Nik Brumsack and Family.

The news of your tragic and premature death is shocking and extremley sad. Your family and friends can feel immensley proud of you for what you achieved in your short life. You had the potential to reach the top in football. A very sad day for QPR and football. We didn't know you personally; but as QPR supporters we have cheered you on from the stands and we have celebrated your goals for the team. Our condolences go to your family and friends at this sad time and also to the family and friends of the other victims of this tragic accident. R.I.P. Ray Jones.
Ray and Mike Gartland, Basingstoke

With strength, agility and poise, Ray had all the qualities to become a truly great player and we shall never see that potential fulfilled.
One of football's brightest young stars is gone and we are all the poorer for that. We send our deepest sympathies to his family and friends.
Our prayers are with you all.

I had the pleasure of meeting Ray a number of times through working as a journalist.
He completely defied the modern stereotype of a young professional footballer, and had his feet firmly on the ground even after breaking into the QPR first team at 17.
So much so ,I remember bumping into him on the platform at Shepherds Bush tube station after a game last season. He was catching the train home with everyone else because he was that humble.
On the train, he had his picture taken with any fan that asked, and through chatting to him it was clear he was a bright lad with a big future ahead of him.
The game has lost one of its good guys.
RIP
Tony Stevens.

I'm shocked to hear about the tragic death of Ray Jones. Football becomes so unimportant when a tragedy like this happens. My thoughts go out to his family and friends.
RIP
Mads, Denmark.

I am a Plymouth Argyle fan, but I was really upset to hear about Ray Jones. It's such a waste of a young life and I am very upset. Deepest sympathies to his family and friends.

For one so young to be lost is a tragegy. That one so young has touched the hearts of so many is a tribute to this young man.
