QPR's Under 18s lost 2-1 at Southend this afternoon, missing the chance to secure the Puma Youth Alliance League title.

Steve Brown's youngsters travelled to Essex knowing that victory over the Shrimpers would see them lift the title, but it wasn't to be.

After a goalless first half, the game exploded into life after the break when the hosts took the lead on 48 minutes.

Undeterred, Rangers fashioned an equaliser mid-way through the second half through Danny Maguire.

Chris Arthur got away down the left flank before pulling the ball back for Matt O'Brien. The R's midfielder cleverly allowed the ball to run on for Maguire, who smashed home from the edge of the box.

The R's were in the ascendancy at this point and went in search of a crucial winner.

Danny Fernandez went close twice, but it was the hosts who scored the crucial second when the game appeared to be fizzling out for a draw.

Southend found a way through in the final minute to emerge victorious.

Brown will be hoping his men return to winning ways next weekend when they host Brentford at Harlington.
