With the signing of Andrew Davies now appearing increasingly unlikely, Ian Holloway has expressed his frustration with the situation.
Although Middlesbrough and Queens Park Rangers have agreed a substantial fee for the player's services, Davies' salary expectations appear to have scuppered the deal.
Holloway was confident he would get his man but is now all but accepting defeat.
"We're 5-0 down with a minute to go on this one," he said. "We spoke about how much it would be (in wages) and our budget and he didn't even want to come down. I think it's crazy, but there you go.
"The noises we were hearing were good and I don't know who is advising him, but there you go - I'm very disappointed.
"I rate him and we're the ones who want him - it's a fantastic offer we've made him.
"I don't know if it is dead but we've done all we can."
