THE FRIDAY PREVIEW: BLADES

Posted on: Fri 12 Mar 2010

Neil Warnock takes his revitalised charges to his former Club, Sheffield United, this weekend.

Buoyed by back-to-back home victories in his first two matches in charge, Warnock will be determined to make his mark on the road.

The Blades, meanwhile, will be aiming to bounce back from Tuesday night's defeat to rock-bottom Peterborough United - their seventh away defeat on the spin in the Championship.

But they'll have to do it the hard way, with Ched Evans (broken collarbone), Jamie Ward (hamstring) and Lee Wiiliamson (hamstring) all picking up serious injuries in the London Road loss.

Star Man

Chris MORGAN - Defender

Known throughout the English footballing scene as a tough, uncompromising and fully committed defender, Chris Morgan's (pictured, below) name has become synonymous with Sheffield United in recent years.

After joining the Blades from Barnsley on a free transfer back in 2003, the Club captain has gone on to make well over 200 appearances for Kevin Blackwell's side, and he holds the somewhat dubious honour of being the most sent off player in United's history.

Morgan's leadership skills both on and off the pitch meant he was the stand-out candidate to replace Robert Page as captain in 2004, just a year after joining the Yorkshire based Club.

The Gaffers

Neil Warnock - "We'll go there looking to win the game.

"It will be my toughest test as QPR Manager. They'll be backed by 25,000 or so fans, so it will be another good challenge for the players.

"I'll be interested to see how the react to playing away from home, because it's my first taste of it at the Club."

Kevin Blackwell - "It's never easy at the best of times. We have seven or eight players out with injuries in a squad of 21, 22, so you can see why we have got a problem.

"It has been like that twice this season. I said for the run-in that we could not afford injuries or suspension but we have got them by the bucketload now."

Classic Encounter

Sheffield United 2, Queens Park Rangers 3

Coca Cola Championship - Saturday 25th February 2006

An inspiring performance from Rangers in a truly enthralling game saw the Super Hoops complete a season's double over the Blades.

Goals from Marc Nygaard (pictured, below) and Paul Furlong came either side of a Chris Morgan own goal in an end to end encounter.

The first half was a game of swings and roundabouts, as United went in ahead, but only after Rangers had previously gone in front.

Marc Nygaard had given Rangers the lead with just six minutes on the clock.

But Ade Akinbiyi's header, followed by a Marc Bircham own goal, turned the game on its head before the break.
