THE FRIDAY PREVIEW: CHELSEA

Posted on: Fri 27 Jan 2012

Just when you thought Loftus Road had enough action for one season from this West London derby, the fourth round FA Cup draw had other ideas.

Saturday's tie promises to be an absolute cracker - and an opportunity for QPR to complete a season's double over the Blues.

Heidar Helguson's 11th-minute spot-kick took all three Barclays Premier League points against nine-man Chelsea in October - and R's fans will be dreaming of a similar scoreline come 2pm tomorrow afternoon.

But Andre Villas-Boas' charges - who, in fourth spot in the top-flight, currently look on course to book their place in next season's Champions League group stages at the very least - will no doubt provide a stern test for Rangers once again, as they did back in October.

Gary Cahill could make his Chelsea debut after completing a transfer from Bolton Wanderers last week.

Michael Essien is also in contention for a Blues start after returning at Norwich City last weekend, following a six-month injury lay-off owing to a serious knee complaint.

Frank Lampard is a serious doubt, however, after tearing his calf muscle at Carrow Road. Didier Drogba and Saloman Kalou definitely miss out, having travelled with the Ivory Coast to the African Cup of Nations.

For Rangers, Nedum Onuoha could make his QPR debut following a move from Manchester City on Thursday morning.

Chelsea Team News:

Likely Starting XI (4-3-3) ...

Bosingwa - Terry - Cahill - Cole

Ramires - Romeu - Meireles

Sturridge - Torres - Mata

Player to Watch ... Daniel STURRIDGE (Striker)

Daniel Sturridge first burst on to the scene at Manchester City in 2007/08, but his contract was allowed to expire and he joined Chelsea in January 2010.

Having joined City's Academy in 2003 from Coventry, after previously training with Aston Villa, Sturridge's performances in the Reserves ensured that he made his mark on the First Team after initially struggling with injuries.

Catching the eye of then-manager Mark Hughes, he was voted City's Young Player of the Year in his breakthrough season, but his hopes of making a mark were not helped by sporadic chances to impress.

Ultimately, Sturridge grew tired of life on the sidelines and when his contract expired, he moved to Stamford Bridge.

In January 2010, a tribunal decided that Chelsea must pay Manchester City an initial transfer fee of £3.5million, rising to £6.5million depending on appearances for Club and the senior England team, but it proved a bargain.

After a loan spell with Bolton in 2010/11, Sturridge returned to make himself one of the Blues' most important players and he looks a promising prospect for both Club and country.

The Numbers Game:

Pre-Match Talk:

QPR gaffer, Mark Hughes: "We will look to build on the Wigan result and performance against a very strong Chelsea side. They have consistently challenged at the top end of the Premier League for a number of years and will present a difficult test.

"Winning football matches is always special and when it is against a former Club, there is always an extra element of satisfaction.

"This will be our toughest test in our short time here, but in a cup competition anything can happen. We will take each game as it comes and try to progress as far as we can."

Blues boss, Andre Villas-Boas:
"We have a competition to win, one of the most prestigious ones. So we will try to put out the strongest team possible.

"(Gary) Cahill can threaten for a starting position.

"The decision not to play him at Norwich was based only on the fact that there was not enough time (after signing him) for him to accumulate all of the information that we put forward."
