R'S YOUNG-GUNS EASE PAST ORIENT

Posted on: Tue 02 Mar 2010

Goals either side of the interval were more than enough for QPR Under-18's, who recorded a 2-0 win against Leyton Orient despite what were difficult weather conditions at Harlington.

Danny Fernandez got the first, side-footing the ball home after Christian Nanetti's cut-back from the byline.

That man Nanetti played then provider again in the second half to set-up Elliott Cox, whose smart finish found the net to ensure the R's of the points.

The rain continued to lash down as the play got underway, causing the game to start off at a frantic pace.

Indeed, the opening 20 minutes proved to make for an end-to-encounter, though it was the R's who made their pressure count.

After a throw-in, Nanetti broke down the flank before cutting the ball back for Fernandez, where the striker passed the ball home for the opening goal of the match.

Following the goal, the R's started to dominate and stood up well to Orient's direct style of play.

Chances by now were few and far between, though Rangers nearly added a second goal just before half time, with Luke Olley seeing his shot cleared off the line.

Nikki-Lee Bulmer then had to be alert at the other end, pulling off a fantastic save to prevent Orient from adding an unlikely equaliser.

Orient, to their credit, came out the better side after the break.

Though Rangers weathered the storm, and were rewarded soon after with a second goal.

Nanetti again was the provider, crossing for Cox who finished well from 15 yards.

With time running out, Orient were reduced to ten men on 80 minutes when they had a player sent off for a second bookable offence after a heavy challenge on Nanetti, who was proving a constant thorn in the side for the opposition.

Orient were then awarded a contentious penalty as the half drew to a close but they couldn't find a way past Bulmer, who saved when the ball was struck down the middle of the goal.

Manager Steve Gallen was delighted with his side's display, and told www.qpr.co.uk: "We were brilliant in what were difficult conditions.

"It was a good and solid performance and we defended well. That's yet another clean sheet.

"Christian Nanetti must get a special mention for setting up two goals, he did well. Danny Fernandez did too, scoring on his first game after coming back from injury."
