Hoops ease to victory in pre-season opener

RANGERS’ first team kicked off their pre-season campaign with a comfortable win, taking a 4-0 victory over National League outfit Bromley.

The behind-closed-doors fixture at Harlington saw QPR boss Ian Holloway field different teams in each half.

Conor Washington was among the starters in the first period, and it was the Northern Ireland international who gave Rangers the lead.

In the 17th minute, the striker capitalised on a misplaced backpass before remaining calm to shoot beyond the visiting goalkeeper from around 15-yards out.

Five minutes later, Washington should have doubled both his and the Hoops’ tally.

Darnell Furlong’s long throw from the right was touched on by Matt Smith, but Washington couldn’t direct his close-range header on-target.

The R’s also struck the crossbar in the 37th minute through Smith, when an initial corner was eventually worked back into the box.

But Smith couldn’t be denied again two minutes later, this time heading into the net from a Luke Freeman corner kick.

Two became three in the 40th minute, to leave the R’s sitting pretty at half-time.

Smith headed back across goal and the ball sat up perfectly for Washington, who volleyed home emphatically from 12 yards for his second of the afternoon.

It was all-change in the second period, though Rangers still seemed content enough.

Shortly after half-time, Ebere Eze raced into the box before shooting inches wide of the left-hand post.

Just before the hour, meanwhile, Grant Hall scooped marginally over, following Sean Goss’ inviting right-flank delivery with his left foot.

QPR were certainly trying for another goal, and after Eze went close once more in the 65th minute, number four arrived two minutes later.

Jake Bidwell’s high, left-wing centre was eventually controlled by Idrissa Sylla, who in turn smashed the ball through the ‘keeper’s legs from 10 yards.

That goal completed the scoring, as Rangers continue to prepare for our Sky Bet Championship season opener against Reading on August 5th.
