QPR kicked off their pre-season campaign with an entertaining 3-3 draw against Charlton Athletic, coming from behind three times in a behind-closed-doors fixture at our Harlington training ground.
Ebere Eze, Conor Washington and Alex Baptise were all on target for the Super Hoops, who fielded separate teams in either half against the League One Addicks.
Summer signing Toni Leistner made his R’s debut and was duly handed 45 minutes of action, in what was also Steve McClaren’s first game in charge of the team.
After a topsy-turvy opening, Charlton took the lead through recent signing Lyle Taylor in the 29th minute, who slid in at close range following a visiting breakaway.
But after Matt Smith’s header was cleared off the line for Rangers, Eze showed great feet to free himself before rifling home from 18 yards in the 39th minute.
David Wheeler and Eze again both went close to adding an R’s second, before Charlton’s Igor Vetokele restored the visitors’ lead in the fourth minute of first-half stoppage time.
After the break, Nicky Ajose forced substitute QPR goalkeeper Matt Ingram into a fine one-handed stop in the 54th minute, ahead of Rangers replying once more on the hour mark.
Ryan Manning teed up Washington, who displayed impressive control with his chest before rifling home from inside the penalty area.
At the other end and with the clock beginning to run down, Karlan Ahearne-Grant was denied by the woodwork for Lee Bowyer’s men – ahead of Patrick Bauer looping home a header to make it 3-2 in the 83rd minute.
But the R’s weren’t to be beaten – Baptiste nodding in Pawel Wszolek’s hanging centre in the 86th minute to complete the scoring in the searing Harlington heat.
