Promotion chasing Charlton down QPR
QPR LADIES fell to a harsh defeat on Sunday when they were beaten by promotion-chasing Charlton Athletic in the FA Women’s Premier League.
Second-half goals from Jenny Newman and Kit Graham proved the difference, giving the South Londoners all three points at Thamesmead.
Alexandra Nord had the best of the chances for Rangers, seeing notable efforts in the first-half flash wide, but ultimately came away with nothing to show for their efforts.
Martino Chevannes rang the changes after last week’s cup exit with returns to the starting XI for Juliette Denny, Callie Neat, Laura Cooper, Jenny Critchley and Dominika Netschova. There was also a welcome sight at the heart of defence with Jade Dempster returning to the R’s.
Rangers had the best of the first half, with striker Nord seeing efforts go past the post.
But it was the hosts, however, who drew first blood on the hour mark when a driven cross ricocheted in off Newman.
The game still seemed to be either teams to take with QPR looking for an equaliser.
But the Addicks secured the points in stoppage time when Graham found the net. A whipped in corner picked out the striker, whose header sneaked in at the far post after some lapse defending by Rangers.
Rangers remain bottom of the FAWPL South division still looking for that first allusive league win while Charlton move up to third.
Meanwhile, it was good news for the Reserves as they recorded a 3-1 victory at Southampton Saints to move up to fifth in the Reserve Southern Division.
After trailing at the break, second-half goals from Jo Blogett, Hope Livett and goalkeeper Chelsea Coles – playing as an emergency striker – handed Neil Bailey’s side all three points.
The First Team now turn their attentions to the County Cup and a home tie with Actonians at Uxbridge on Sunday.
