Ladies edged out in five goal thriller
QPR LADIES were edged out in a five-goal affair with Portsmouth at Fratton Park on Sunday.
Martino Chevannes’ side found themselves 3-0 down inside half an hour, but pulled a goal back before half-time through Nicki Waterman.
Substitute Sara Lopez set up a grandstand finish with a second late on, but it wasn’t enough to prevent Rangers suffering a damaging defeat in the FA Women's Premier League.
Cheered on by a sizeable home crowd, Pompey made the breakthrough inside eight minutes. Former R’s midfielder Lauren Peck provided the assist for Samantha Quayle, who lobbed the ball beyond Sophie Cheadle.
The early pressure continued and led to Pompey’s second goal midway through the half. Quayle again added the finishing touch, rounding Cheadle before poking home into an empty net despite strong offside claims.
And it was 3-0 before the half-hour. A loose ball broke to Natasha Stephens 18 yards out, who gave Cheadle no chance by drilling the ball into the top corner.
Rangers responded well, and pulled a goal back before half-time. A corner was headed home by Waterman to give the R’s renewed hope at the interval.
Those hopes were rekindled five minutes from time when substitute Lopez set up a grandstand finish, pulling another goal back with a neat finish.
It proved too little too late, though, as Pompey weathered the R's late pressure to hold on for a win which almost certainly condemns Rangers to bottom spot in the FAWPL South with one game to go.
The Ladies sign off the season against second-bottom Swindon Town on Sunday.
