Ladies end season with a win

QPR LADIES signed off The FA Women’s Premier League season with an impressive 2-0 win at the County Ground against Swindon Town on Sunday.

A goal in either half was enough for Martino Chevannes’ side, as strikes from Jo Blodgett and Juliette Denny fired Rangers to just their second success of the campaign.

At the other end, stand-in goalkeeper Jenny Critchley kept a welcome clean sheet as the visitors ended a disappointing 2016/17 on a high.

Stacey Sowden led the line up front, and fashioned the first couple of chances either side of the 20-minute mark. Her first seemed to be blocked by a hand in the box only for the referee to wave the R’s penalty appeals away, before finding the side netting with her next attempt.

Rangers came closer moments later. Another well-worked move this time freed Blodgett in the box but her shot went just past the far post.

At the other end, top scorer Critchley – deputising in goal for the injured Sophie Cheadle – was called into action to keep out Sammy Hallsworth’s long-range effort.

But it was the visitors who were carrying the greater threat, and Rangers got the goal their play deserved two minutes before half-time. Kasha Petit’s lofted effort was spilled by Robyn Lovett in the Town goal, allowing Blodgett to poke home the rebound.

Rangers continued where they left off after the interval – doubling their lead five minutes into the second half in some style. Denny picked up the ball 25 yards out before unleashing an unstoppable shot into the bottom right-hand corner.

Swindon tried to find a way back but with no joy. Critchley remained relatively untroubled but reacted well on the hour-mark, diving bravely to smother a chance inside the box.

Rangers went close to adding a third goal when Sowden dragged a shot wide, but it mattered not as Chevannes’ side saw out the closing stages with ease on their way to a comfortable victory.

QPR Ladies end the season bottom, below Swindon only on goal difference.
