Charlton Athletic U23s v QPR U23s

EBERE Eze’s sixth goal of the season wasn’t quite enough to earn QPR’s Under-23s a point despite a battling display against table-topping Charlton Athletic on Monday.

Brandon Hanlan had given the Addicks an early lead at The Valley but Rangers responded well, equalising through Eze midway through the first half.

However, minutes later AJ Folkes was sent off for two bookable offences before Josh Parker broke the R’s resolve with what proved the decisive goal 18 minutes from time.

Paul Hall’s side fell behind inside six minutes. George Lapslie’s through ball released Hanlan, who coolly slotted the ball past Seng Dieng in the R’s goal.

Charlton continued to control the opening stages, but Rangers made their first attack of note count just before the half-hour mark. Eze pounced on a loose ball in the box, guiding his half volley inside the far corner.

However, just as Rangers were getting a foothold in the game they were dealt a blow when Folkes received his marching orders. The midfielder picked up two cautions in quick successions to leave Rangers a man light for the best part of 50 minutes.

Despite their numerical disadvantage, it was Rangers who posed the greater threat after the re-start – going closest when Eze curled a free-kick just wide.

Eze and co had goalkeeper Dieng to thank at the other end, though, when he pulled off an acrobatic save to keep out substitute Louis Yamfam.

Dieng was beaten 18 minutes from time, though. Archie Edwards’ deep cross reached Parker, whose header crept inside the near post.

Rangers continued to push forwards in search of a second equaliser but to no avail, as the home side held out for all three points.
