QPR Under-23s sting Bees
SUBSTITUTE Romeo Akinola scored twice as QPR Under-23s secured a 3-0 friendly win against Brentford’s B team on Tuesday evening.
Rangers took the lead after 13 minutes through Dan Darbyshire, before midfielder Akinola scored twice in the final 20 minutes to continue Paul Hall’s side 100 per cent start to the new season.
Darbyshire’s early opener came after the R’s youngster found space at the back post to head home Ody Alfa’s cross from the right following strike partner Aramide Oteh’s flick on.
And soon after Rangers should have made it 2-0 when a good turn by Oteh on the edge of the Bees box saw his first effort saved by keeper Luke Daniels before he then spurned the rebound into the side netting.
Centre-back Giles Phillips then registered the R’s next chance as he rattled the stanchion behind the Brentford goal from the edge of the 18-yard box.
Brentford battled back though and twice went close to equalising. Firstly Senny Dieng did well in the QPR goal to push away Ali Coote’s powerful free-kick before Justin Shaibu headed Lukas Talbro’s cross wide of the post in the 36th minute as QPR led at the break.
Following the restart only the crossbar could deny Brentford an equaliser after 60 seconds when Sergi Canós fired against the woodwork from just inside the R’s penalty area.
QPR’s goal continued to be under pressure and a late block from Chris Paul on the hour mark prevented Bradley Clayton from equalising from 15-yards.
But from then on in QPR took control and four minutes after coming off the bench substitute Romeo Akinola made it 2-0 with a stunning free-kick. After being fouled 22-yards from goal the 18-year-old drilled the resulting free-kick low into the bottom corner and past the diving Daniels.
Akinola completed QPR’s victory five minutes from time when a short corner between Kakay and Paul found the midfielder on the edge of the Brentford area before he fired low into the far corner to make it 3-0.
