Under-23s finish pre-season with a draw

THE R’s under-23 side ended pre-season on Monday evening with a 2-2 draw against Southampton at the Premier League sides Staplewood training facility.

Despite taking a two goal first half lead through Eberechi Eze and Giles Phillips, Paul Hall’s young side conceded twice either side of half-time to end their warm-up fixtures with a draw.

QPR started brightly and ten minutes into the match they would have taken the lead had it not been for four quick fire saves from Saints keeper Jack Rose.

The Southampton stopper was on hand to deny Eberechi Eze, a trialist, Eze again and Osman Kakay all in the space of frantic 15 seconds.

However, the R’s eventually did take the lead in the 26th minute when Eze finally beat Rose with a free-kick from 25-yards into the left hand corner.

Rangers doubled their advantage four minutes later after defender Giles Phillips lashed home from the edge of the penalty area following the hosts failure to clear Eze’s corner.

Southampton did reduce QPR’s 2-0 lead however, when seven minutes before the half-time break a ball over the top allowed Sam Gallagher to race in one-on-one with R’s keeper Seny Dieng before cooly slotting home.

After the interval Saints pulled level in the 57th minute when Will Smallbone flicked in from a right wing cross to make it 2-2.

Dieng was called into action nine minutes from to make a point blank save before QPR went close to stealing a late victory at the other end when Finland youth international Niko Hamalainen struck the post three minutes from time as QPR Under-23s signed off for pre-season with a draw.
