QPR FC Women kicked off 2020 with a 2-2 draw with local side Ashford Town in the South East Regional Women’s League Cup on Sunday.

Goals from Jo Blodgett and Chloe Sampson ensured the R’s got a share of the spoils as they came from behind on two occasions to progress through to the next round of the League Cup.

Steve Quashie’s side started brightly but, in what were tough conditions, it was Ashford who created the first threatening opportunity when Ashley Wilson broke through the R’s backline only to be denied by Lucie White in the Rangers goal.

This chance encouraged the hosts with Jo Wilson the next to have an effort on goal, but the former Rangers striker was denied by Lily Last on the line.

Quashie’s side eventually found their feet in the game, with Carla Perez and Sampson linking up well, but the attacker's cross was fumbled by goalkeeper Gracie Perkis, who eventually did well to recover the ball.

The visitors continued to grow, but went behind in the 20th minute when Wilson broke through the R’s defence and lobbed White to give Ashford the lead.

This goal seemed to wake Rangers up and Quashie’s side were able to carve out a hatful of opportunities with Blodgett, Melanie Hall and Sampson all having the chance to equalise.

On the stroke of half time, Rangers finally got what they deserved when midfielder Blodgett smashed the ball home from the edge of the box, making it all square at the break.

Following half-time, the hosts started the livelier and with five minutes of the second half played, Wilson managed to latch onto a through ball and convert from a tight angle to restore Ashford’s lead.

Nine minutes later, Rangers striker Sampson produced the moment of the game when her stunning strike rocketed into the top corner, drawing the R’s level once again. Quashie’s team continued to push for a winner with Tiffany Skinner, Milly Cutler and Annie Dzyadyk all having efforts to give Rangers the lead, but to no avail.

With 20 minutes left on the clock, attacker Hall felt she should’ve had a penalty when she was brought down in the box, but the referee waved play on and Skinner did just that and forced Perkis into a fine save.

Neither side were able to find that final moment of quality and the game finished all square. This result meant Rangers topped their group and progressed through to the next round of the League Cup.
