  • QPR draw 0-0 with Newport County in pre-season friendly
  • Tjaronn Chery completes 45 minutes against League Two side
  • Rangers face Italian Serie A side Atalanta at Loftus Road in seven days

QPR’s penultimate pre-season friendly ended in a 0-0 draw at Newport County on Sunday afternoon.

New signing Tjaronn Chery played 45 minutes at Rodney Parade as the R’s played out a goalless draw.

Newport County had the first chance when inside the opening four minutes’ striker Lenell John-Lewis forced Rob Green into an early save.

Meanwhile, at the other end Sebastian Polter should have done better when he closed down on the goal but his tame effort was easily gathered by County goalkeeper Joe Day.

As torrential rain continued to fall in Wales, Darnell Furlong unleashed a speculative effort from distance but the youngster was unable to hit the target.

It continued to be all QPR and the R’s should have been ahead when on 22 minutes Jay Emmanuel-Thomas’ 20-yard shot forced keeper Day to parry but Polter could only win a corner from the follow-up.

Rob Green saved youngster Cole Kpekawa’s blushes when he gave the ball away cheaply inside the R’s penalty area but the QPR number one was on hand to deny John-Lewis from ten-yards just before the half hour mark.

Former Grimsby Town forward John-Lewis threatened an opener again when he side footed from the edge of the area but Green comfortably gathered in his arms before the England international was again called into action to block with his chest at the far post after Mark Byrne’s cross was met by Scott Boden from all of three-yards.

R’s Head Coach Chris Ramsey made three changes at the break as Green, Luongo and Chery were replaced by Lumley, Doughty and Phillips but it failed to spark the match into life with neither side threatening.

T rain finally came to an end and the sun peaked out in Newport and that was the cue for the second half to spring into life. Phillips fired over from a wide position before Polter was thwarted in the box by a County defender as he brought the ball down from a cross.

That was however all the second half had to offer as a series of substitutes for both sides stifled the match as it ended 0-0.

Rangers return to Loftus Road in a week’s time for their final pre-season fixture of the season when they host Serie A outfit Atalanta.

QPR: Green (Lumley 46), Furlong, Wise, Caulker, Kpekawa, Luongo (Doughty 46), Faurlin, Chery (Phillips 46), Emmanuel-Thomas, Polter, Hoilett.

Subs not used: Comley, Grego-Cox, Kakay, Onuoha.
