PAUL Furlong’s Under-18s couldn’t prevent Watford extending their 13-game unbeaten run at the top of Professional Development League Two (South) on Tuesday afternoon.
One goal in either half proved enough for the table toppers whilst Rangers ended a man light after Tom Matthews was dismissed for a second yellow card.
The young R’s began brightly at London Colney – threatening first through Jardell Francis. The striker burst through on goal but was denied by goalkeeper Andrew Thomas.
Instead, it was Watford who made the breakthrough on the quarter-hour mark. After a foul on the edge of the box, Dion Pereira’s free-kick deflected inside the bottom corner.
The early goal didn’t deter Furlong’s youngsters, who continued to create chances at the other end. Ody Alfa headed one over, Charlie Fox flashed a shot wide but it was the hosts who doubled their lead soon after the re-start.
Ashley Charles’ cross from the left found Ogo Obi, who steered his looping header beyond the R’s trialist goalkeeper.
It would prove the end to the afternoon’s scoring, though ten minutes from time Matthews saw red after a foul on substitute Treon Johnson.
Rangers return to action at Harlington on Saturday against North division leaders Nottingham Forest.
QPR: Trialist, Springer-Downes, Barzey, Anastasiou, Matthews, Fox, Francis (Miller 60), Bettache, Alfa (Mesias 60), Clarke (Trialist 60), Cardoso.
