Charlie Owens signs new one-year deal

CHARLIE Owens has signed a new one-year contract at QPR – keeping him at Loftus Road until the summer of 2023.

The 24-year-old – who joined the club five years ago – has fought his way back from a serious knee problem in more recent times, becoming a regular for Rangers’ B Team and Under-23s during the second half of last season.

Charlie will now look to force his way into the first-team picture under new head coach Michael Beale.

Director of football Les Ferdinand said: “Charlie has always had real potential.

“However, unfortunately, injuries have given him setback after setback.

“We felt we had to give him this opportunity to prove himself, especially with Michael coming in.”

Owens added: “I’m so thankful to Les, Chris Ramsey and all of the staff – it would have been easy not to give me a new deal given my injuries previously.

“I’ve obviously had a tough few years, but I’ve worked so hard to get back and have been playing B Team and Under-23s football since December last year.

“It’s been amazing to get back playing and I feel like I’m ready now. I’m fully fit and ready to really start my career."

Charlie says he has already spoken with head coach Beale ahead of pre-season training getting underway this week.

“It’s exciting,” he said. “I’ve seen the way the new manager speaks about developing players and it’s exactly what the club needs. We have a lot of good, young players here who he can definitely take to the next level.

“I have spoken to him and he has set out what he thinks I can achieve this season. He knows my injury history and he has seen me play in the past. He has also spoken about the way he wants us to play and formations as part of that.

“If I can do what I know I can do, I’m confident that I can play games this season.

“I’m at an age now where I need to be playing regular first-team football. The last three or four years have been so hard, but I have done everything I can to get back fit and I think that’s why I have been given this opportunity to show what I can do.”
