Keeper Smithies scoops awards treble

ALEX Smithies' impressive season in goal for QPR has been rewarded with three gongs in the club's end of season awards.

The R's number one has been named Supporters’ Player of the Year, Ray Jones Players’ Player of the Year and Junior Hoops’ Player of the Year.

Smithies has been in inspired form this season, keeping six clean sheets in 44 appearances and forging an ever-growing reputation of saving penalty kicks.

Speaking exclusively to www.qpr.co.uk, the 27-year-old expressed his delight at scooping the awards treble, commenting: “It’s nice to get some sort of recognition for the work you’ve been doing all season, so I’m really delighted to win all three awards.

“It always means a lot when your team-mates vote for you and the fans have been fantastic with me since I arrived here, so the two awards they’ve voted for are special too.

“In general, it’s not been a great season for us, but I’ve enjoyed the support I’ve received from everyone for my performances this season.

“I love playing in front of the QPR fans – they’re an exceptional bunch of supporters – and we want to finish the last two games strongly for them.”

Elsewhere, Ryan Manning has capped a fine breakthrough season by winning the Daphne Biggs Supporters’ Young Player of the Year award.

The 20-year-old, who made his debut against Wolverhampton Wanderers on New Year's Eve, has gone on to make 16 appearances in the Sky Bet Championship, scoring one goal.

The 2016/17 Kiyan Prince Goal of the Season award has gone to Yeni Ngbakoto for his stunning free-kick against Birmingham City on February 18th.

Entering the fray as an 85th minute substitute with Rangers 3-1 up, Ngbakoto set the seal on a stunning away win for the R's with a brilliant 30-yard free-kick at St. Andrews, as Ian Holloway's side ran out 4-1 winners.

Finally, A Kick Up The R's fanzine editor Dave Thomas has been named Supporter of the Year.

Thomas, a lifelong Rangers fan, celebrates his award in the 30th year of the popular fanzine, which continues to go from strength-to-strength season on season.

Congratulations to all our winners.

I’ve enjoyed the support I’ve received from everyone for my performances this season.
