MASSIMO Luongo’s Australia will have to qualify the hard way for next summers World Cup after Saudi Arabia beat Japan on Tuesday evening.
Earlier in the day the Socceroos beat Thailand 2-1 in Melbourne with QPR midfielder Luongo an unused substitute.
The Aussie’s needed Group B winners Japan to beat or draw with Saudi Arabia to seal Australia’s automatic qualification for the finals in Russia in 2018.
However, the Saudi’s picked up a 1-0 victory meaning they pipped Australia to qualification.
As a result Australia will now go into a Round 4 and face Syria over two legs in October.
The winner will then progress to a play-off double header in November against a side from the CONCACF zone for the a place at the 2018 finals.
