McClaren ready for pre-season return

STEVE McClaren is looking forward to welcoming his new squad to the Harlington training ground on Monday when they return for the start of pre-season.

The first day will consist of testing before the players head out to Portugal later in the week for a seven-day training camp.

“I can’t wait for Monday,” McClaren told www.qpr.co.uk, “to see the mentality and see how they come back.

“Then we will be focused on the next deadline, which is the first game of the season – Preston away.

“By then the transfer window will have almost closed so we should have our squad together by that point. Obviously we can still loan after that, but we want our squad together very quickly.”

After the opening-day trip to Deepdale, Rangers host Sheffield United at Loftus Road before taking on West Brom (a), Bristol City (h) and Wigan (h).

“It’s always important to get off to a good start but what we have to focus on is preparation and making sure we are ready for that first game.

“I always say to see where you are after ten games as that, roughly, is a good gauge as to where you are going to end up.”

McClaren has been a regular at the training ground over the past two weeks, working with John Eustace and Matt Gardiner, and he added: “I am delighted with how things have gone so far.

“I am pleased we have had time to settle in. We have been on our own so it has given us time to go out and meet players, talk with players, look at players. We would like to bring a couple in.

“It has been a busy period up until this moment and on Monday it all begins.

“We are coming here to win. To win for the club, win for the fans. That’s what we want to see. Secondly, we want to develop the players.

“We are here to help on both counts to make sure we do that.”
