PAUL Smyth’s hopes of qualifying for the 2019 UEFA U21 Euro Finals were kept alive on Thursday night courtesy of a 1-0 win for Northern Ireland.
The diminutive QPR attacker played the full 90 minutes for the Irish as they secured a 1-0 victory in Iceland.
Daniel Ballard’s 90th-minute winner from a corner handed Ian Baraclough’s team victory in Reykjavik.
The win means Northern Ireland are second in Group 2 with one game remaining against third-placed Slovakia next week.
The nine section winners automatically joining the co-hosts – Italy – in the finals and the four runners-up with the best record against the sides first, third, fourth and fifth in their pools playing off for the remaining two places.
