A popular figure at Loftus Road, his return to W12 has been well received by the R's faithful, who thoroughly enjoyed 'walking in a Mackie wonderland' during his first spell in west London.
Mackie, of course, initially joined Rangers from Plymouth Argyle in August 2010. He played a pivotal role in the R's promotion-winning campaign of 2010/11, hitting the ground running in a Rangers shirt with eight goals in his first seven Championship outings, including a memorable last-minute equaliser against Derby County in a 2-2 draw at Pride Park.
Scotland soon came calling, with the attacking midfielder scoring his first goal for the Tartan Army against the Faroe Islands in November 2010, only for Mackie's season to end prematurely when he sustained a broken leg in an FA Cup tie against Blackburn Rovers in January 2011.
Undeterred, he returned to full fitness in early October, and went on to score his first Premier League goal against Sunderland soon after.
Another followed against Swansea City six days later, as Mackie ended the season with seven goals to his name, including a memorable last-gasp winner in our 3-2 win at home to Liverpool, and a fantastic header on the final day, in the now iconic clash against Manchester City, when Rangers lost 3-2, but survived! He went on to make a further 37 appearances the following season, yet despite his whole-hearted performances, Rangers were relegated.
A move to Nottingham Forest followed in the summer of 2013, with Mackie keen to explore new opportunities. He notched five goals in his first season at the City Ground, but moved to Reading on loan in the summer of 2014. Playing the majority of the season in his preferred front role, he helped Reading to the FA Cup semi-final, where they lost to eventual winners, Arsenal. He scored six goals in 39 appearances for the Royals.
He re-joined Rangers in 2015 but injuries restricted him to just 16 appearances in the 2015/16 campaign and 19 the season after.
Mackie signed a new one-year contract extension in the summer of 2017.
