BORN in East Anglia and of Zimbabwean heritage, Macauley Bonne was raised in Ipswich and signed for his hometown club as a boy, aged eight.
By 14, Bonne had moved across the Suffolk border to Norwich City and, three years later, he joined Colchester United.
After hitting 46 goals in 54 appearances for the U's academy, Bonne was promoted to the first-team set up and, four days shy of his 18th birthday, he made his senior debut, coming on as a substitute against Shrewsbury Town.
If that wasn’t enough of an early present, when his birthday came four days later, he scored the winner against Peterborough United for his first professional goal.
The fledgling frontman was gaining valuable first-team experience as part of the U’s attack and, after a penning a new two-year deal in Essex, he earned his first call up to the Zimbabwean national side.
Loan stints at Lincoln City and Woking would ensure that he kept getting regular senior football at club level and in the summer of 2017 he made a permanent move to Leyton Orient.
It was with Orient that the goals started to fly in for the striker. He fired home 22 in his first season in east London, earning the club's Player of the Season award, and a year later he bettered his tally by one to help them seal promotion back to League Two.
His 45-goal haul caught the attention of multiple suitors and last summer he jumped up three divisions to join Charlton Athletic in the Championship.
Initially having to remain patient for his opportunity, Bonne bagged his first Championship goal on his maiden league start for the Addicks - in a 1-0 win over eventual champions Leeds United.
The match-winning strike was the catalyst for him to hit four goals in five matches and he would end the 2019/20 campaign with 11 goals from 29 league starts.
